Invisalign Q & A

by Tzur Gabi, DMD

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a patented proprietary system that uses 3D modeling software and cutting-edge manufacturing technology to provide a clear, removable solution for straightening teeth. Invisalign was designed with leading orthodontists and is FDA cleared. Invisalign has the experience of over 1,000,000 patients worldwide, and has a 96% of patient satisfaction rate. And, 9 out of 10 patients would recommend Invisalign to their friends and family.

Is Invisalign the same as regular braces?

No, Invisalign uses a completely different approach to straightening teeth. Instead of relying on an interconnected system of metal wires and bands that must be tightened over and over again during treatment to help teeth become straighter, Invisalign uses a series of specially-designed clear plastic trays called aligners that slip over your teeth, gently moving them into proper alignment over time.

What benefits does Invisalign offer compared to traditional orthodontics?

Invisalign offers several key advantages, most of which are directly related to the custom-made aligners:

  • Invisalign makes it easier to care for teeth because the aligners can be removed; that means you can continue to brush and floss your teeth and have regular dental treatments, just like you've always done.
  • Because the trays are removable, you can eat foods you'd need to avoid with traditional braces.
  • Plus, aligners can be removed for special occasions and picture-taking events.
  • The clear aligners are nearly invisible, so they're very hard to detect. That means patients don't feel embarrassed or self-conscious when wearing them.
  • There are no sharp metal edges or wires to cut into lips or gums.
  • Aligners are custom-designed to fit each patient's unique mouth shape and alignment issues for a truly-one-of-a-kind approach that's geared for faster results.

How are the aligners made?

Your treatment begins with a mold or impression of your mouth which is scanned into a computer. Special software creates a series of 3-D images based on your impression to demonstrate the changes your mouth would have to go through to achieve proper alignment. Then the aligners are created to match those images, so when you wear them in order, they'll straighten your teeth. Most treatments can be completed in one to two years using from 18 to 30 aligners.
